| For the past six years, Finns has
been the main restoration contractor implementing a phased restoration,
renovation and maintenance programme at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear
Hospital in Dublin.
The project has posed numerous challenges, not least in
the provision of scaffold and rope access by our in-house team of
advanced steeplejacks across the labyrinthine structure of the hospital.
This was achieved without any loss of operational capacity to the
hospital and our access teams were able to complete the tasks in full
consultation with the surgical teams to ensure no theatre was disrupted
nor patient recovery disturbed.
To date, our craftsmen have carried out numerous
restoration and renovation aspects including
-
Restoration of sash and dormer windows to their
original condition
-
Replace and repair rainwater goods using bespoke
sand-cast moulds
-
Effected intricate in-situ structural concrete
repairs
-
Replaced and repaired the Hospital roof back to
original condition using the best-sourced slates
-
More than 15 Victorian chimneys have been rebuilt,
rebraced and/or repointed
-
Hundreds of metres of lead joints reformed and
plinths and rainwater goods recoated by our lead crafstmen
We have worked closely with the client and their
architect, the Tony Mullen Practice in Dun Laoghaire, to both plan and
execute the works to ensure the hospital building fabric will benefit
for years to come. |

Finns have been proud to implement the
hospital's restoration programme but the project has required demanding
and intricate temporary works to provide the access for client
inspection and to carry out the specified works.
Working within the confines of an
operational specialist hospital have posed logistical issues which the
Finns team, led by Tim McAvoy, have managed to find solutions to.
The project has required us to not only
stretch our existing skillbase but also to retrain and reskill in new
disciplines to achieve the results we, and the client, were happy with.
Interleaving our various skill
disciplines allowed our crews to blend modern technological solutions
with the attention to detail and compliance required when dealing with
Protected areas of the structure.
2008 sees Finns commencing restoration
works to the rear elevation of the hospital including Phase II of
the dormer and sash window renewal programme. |
