Letting a building breatheThe heritage buildings standing today owe a great debt to our forebears who understood the protective and flexible properties of lime and used it for their renders, harling and mortar. Legion are the buildings damaged by inappropriate use of modern materials used to 'patch' it up or indeed wholesale replacement of original lime render by modern cement compounds. Simply put, lime compounds allow a building to breathe. They allows moisture to dissipate thus inhibiting damp and also accommodate a structure's need to move as it responds to changes in temperature and moisture.
We have seen numerous buildings 'trapped' by modern cement renders which have simply sealed in moisture causing damp and aiding erosion of the original stonework and ultimately its structural integrity. At Finns we are happy to advise on the use of lime mortars, internal and external plasters and harling and pointing works. Our lime putties and hydrated lime is sourced directly from the St Astier quarries in France which we visit each year to continually assess quality and specification. We always ensure correct preparation, material specification and application and works done will be in harmony with the original building.
